A credit score is a three-digit summary of a credit report. The report lists loans, credit cards, what you owe, what you repaid, and the times a lender asked about you because you applied. The score compresses that history into a number. In India the Reserve Bank requires every credit information company to use a scale from 300 to 900.
CIBIL is the name people use, because TransUnion CIBIL is the bureau they have heard of. Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark are the other companies on the Reserve Bank’s list of credit information companies. Each can have a score. They need not match, because they may not hold the same accounts. A lender chooses which file to pull.
You are entitled to one free full report from each company, including the score, once in a calendar year. That has been the rule since the Reserve Bank’s 2016 direction, and the later reporting directions keep the same scale. A paid “instant score” is a product. It is not the free report. If an account is wrong, dispute it. The correction process is free. The bureau writes to the lender. The update is due within 30 days.
The score is an input to a lender’s decision. It is not an input to the EMI formula. The formula needs the amount, the yearly rate and the months. A better score might help you get a lower rate. After the letter is signed, the score has done its work.
A worked example
Take the home-loan starting point on this site: ₹50,00,000, 8.25%, 20 years. The EMI is ₹42,603. Interest over the term is ₹52,24,892. None of those three outputs reads a score.
The rate 8.25% sits 2.75% above the repo rate of 5.5%. A bank might have offered that spread partly because of a score. Another person might be offered the bottom of SBI’s card, 7.5%, or the top, 8.8%. Put the offered rate into the EMI calculator. Read the CIBIL guide if the report itself looks wrong. Do not pay a third party to “rebuild” a file that is accurate.
Mistakes people make
- Using “CIBIL” as the name for every bureau.
- Paying every month for a score you can take free once a year.
- Assuming a score of 750 is an official cut-off. The Reserve Bank does not publish one.
- Disputing a loan that is real and still overdue. The process fixes mistakes. It does not erase debts.
- Letting a score website’s EMI banner replace the rate in your sanction letter.
The rule
Reserve Bank credit-information directions: the 300–900 scale, and one free full report a calendar year. There is no tax section for the score. If you claim home-loan interest, that is section 22 (this was section 24(b)), old regime only, capped at ₹2,00,000.
Questions
Is a credit score the same as a CIBIL score?
A CIBIL score is one bureau’s credit score. Other credit information companies keep their own scores on the same 300 to 900 scale. A lender may look at more than one.
How often is the free report available?
Once in a calendar year, from each bureau, including the score. A dispute on a wrong account is free, and the update is due within 30 days of the bureau taking it up with the lender.
Will a better score cut this EMI?
Only if the bank changes the rate in the sanction letter. The calculator turns ₹50,00,000 at 8.25% into an EMI of ₹42,603 with no score in the formula.
